Chicago’s Horween Leather Company was founded in 1905 by Ukrainian immigrant Isadore Horween. At the time there were hundreds of commercial leather tanneries in the Unites States, but today Horween is one of about a dozen still in operation. The company is currently run by Skip Horween and his son Nick who represent the fourth and fifth generations of this storied family business. Horween has built and maintained its success around traditional techniques and uncompromising quality. Many of their signature products, such as Aniline Chromexcel and Genuine Shell Cordovan, have become industry benchmarks and are sought out internationally by luxury manufacturers. In addition to footwear and leather goods, Horween supplies exclusive leathers for the NBA, NFL and MLB. Click through for the full post.
We are excited to announce the launch of our first in-house leather care products: Viberg Leather Conditioner and Viberg Leather Castile Soap. When developing these products we knew that we wanted to work with someone local who understood our company’s values and expectations for quality. We make our footwear the traditional way, using the best materials available and we needed our care products to reflect this process. Mike St. Claire of Steele & Co. decided to follow in his grandmother’s footsteps when he discovered her soap making tools and recipes. His brand now produces a full range of grooming products and is available in stores across the country. We travelled to Mike’s workshop to get a behind the scenes look at his manufacturing process.
