The leather used in this unique Service Boot® makeup is a near-perfect reproduction of the mythical 17th-century Russian leather. J&FJ studied the only remaining 18th-century rolls of leather recovered from the sunken Russian ship, the Metta Catharina, off the Devon/Cornwall coast, in 1973.

As Britain's sole remaining Oak Bark Tannery, J&FJ spent six years developing this tannage before bringing it to market.
Instead of the traditional reindeer used in 17th century Russia, J&FJ uses premium, UK-sourced calfskins, soaked in pits of three different barks; oak, willow, and birch, for 12 months.

This particular shade of brown uses bark extracts from rolls recovered from the shipwrecked Metta Catharina. J&FJ further customized this leather for Viberg by tanning it in a smooth grain leather vs. traditional Russian leather which has a "reindeer" or hatch grain. Russian leather's unique use of birch oil, blended to preserve the smell, flexibility, and tensile strength, creates an elegant hard-wearing & water-resistant leather that is among the finest we have ever used.
